The vast majority of our garments (about 80%) are designed and made right here in Canada. Since day one, we’ve been committed to prioritizing local production. However, over the years, producing 100% locally has become increasingly challenging—due to factory closures, labour shortages, rising costs, and a lack of specialized machinery.
That’s why we made the decision to move a portion of our production (around 20%) internationally. This choice allows us to maintain the accessibility of our sustainable clothing, protect our team’s jobs, and ensure the long-term viability of ORAKI. All of our international partners are carefully selected: we work only with certified factories that share our human and environmental values.
Our recycled fibres are made from post-consumer plastic (such as PET bottles) sourced from various parts of the world. This plastic is turned into fibre in the U.S., then spun into yarn in specialized mills around the globe, depending on the needs of each collection.
As is the case for most Canadian-based brands, it’s not always possible to produce our fabrics locally due to the lack of adequate machinery. That’s why some of our fabrics are imported—even though most of our garments are still assembled right here in Canada.
In the spirit of transparency, the manufacturing location of each garment is clearly indicated in the product description, so you can shop with confidence.
-
Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical that has been used to manufacture certain plastics for years. Exposure to BPA is widely considered a health risk. Therefore, to make our fabrics, we solely use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles with the number 1 label that do not contain any BPA.
ORAKI Production
-
In recent years, local production has become a major challenge. With factory closures, inflation, rising costs, labor shortages, and a lack of specialized machinery, producing 100% locally requires extraordinary resilience. I have done everything in my power to sustain this production model, even after suffering significant production and financial losses, and despite several setbacks.
-
Absolutely not. The vast majority of our clothing continues to be manufactured in Quebec, with our long-standing production partners. We remain deeply rooted here and committed to investing in our team and our local manufacturers. For this reason, even with a small portion of our production taking place outside of Canada, we are still considered a Quebec-based company.
-
We have carefully assessed our needs and opted for a balance that allows us to:
- Maintain financial stability and protect local jobs
- Keep the core of our production within Quebec
- Open the door to new pieces and innovation
-
We are currently working with factories in Colombia, Mexico, Asia, and Türkiye. We have conducted several tests and have been developing relationships to determine which partners are most aligned with ORAKI. Each of these entities are certified partners whom we know personally and with whom we collaborate without compromising on our high standards of quality and responsibility.
-
We only choose to work with certified manufacturers (e.g., BSCI, WRAP, ISO, etc.) who guarantee:
- Safe working conditions
- Fair wages
- Respect for human rights (no forced labor, no exploitation, no child labor)
These factories are proud to hold globally recognized certifications that highlight ethical and sustainable practices:
Fair Wear Foundation focuses on improving working conditions in clothing apparel factories by ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and the complete absence of forced labor or child labor.
- Sedex is a global platform for ethical business practices that ensures supply chain transparency and compliance with labor rights.
- Global Recycled Standard (GRS) verifies recycled content and ensures responsible social, environmental, and chemical production practices.
- Bluesign® guarantees that harmful substances are eliminated at the start of the manufacturing process, thereby protecting workers, consumers, and the environment.
- Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 guarantees that every product component – be it the thread, the fabric, or the accessories – has been tested and certified as free of harmful substances.
Taken together, these certifications demonstrate that the factory adheres to strict global standards for sustainability and worker well-being.
-
Yes. Regardless of where it is manufactured, every ORAKI item of clothing is designed, developed, and approved here in Quebec. We apply the same standards of quality, comfort, and sustainability, whether our production is executed here or abroad. There are excellent factories around the world, often more expensive, and we choose to work with them to maintain our exceptional quality standards.
-
As you know, transparency is part of our DNA. That's why every item of clothing on our website clearly states whether or not it is made in Quebec, so you can feel confident in your choices.
-
No. Our core values remain unchanged: we are committed to designing sustainable clothing, made with respect for people and our planet. The materials and manufacturing processes we thoughtfully select abroad meet the same environmental criteria as those produced in Quebec.
-
Not necessarily. We have chosen to work exclusively with high-end factories that offer more advanced manufacturing techniques and are certified to ensure respect for people and the environment.
There are many different types of factories abroad. The partners we have chosen are among the most stringent and responsible in their processes, even if this entails higher costs.
Our goal has always been to offer a fair price: one that accurately reflects our quality, expertise, and values. For some items, we will certainly be able to offer a lower price, while for others, the price will remain within the same range.
